Great option for Asian cuisine with Japanese, Chinese, and Korean menu options. My son loves sushi, but my daughter does not. But Sushi Popo has something for everyone and all delicious. I've been to Sushi Popo a number of times over the years and I've never been disappointed. I used to order a sushi combo, but since the new owner has expanded the menu to include Chinese and Korean items, I have a hard time deciding what to order because I want one of everything! This past week I ventured in with my family and had a thoroughly enjoyable experience. We started off with some hot braised chicken wings, crab rangoons, and spring rolls. The chicken wings the best I've had anywhere!!! You have to try them! My son loves California Rolls. He ordered two ... they were larger than what he is used to getting elsewhere, which was a welcome surprise for him. 8 pieces per roll! He ate them all. My daughter loves noodles and hates sushi. She ordered the yakisoba ... huge portion ... way more than nine year old kid could ever eat. My wife ordered Chinese; burnt peanut chicken; one of the house specialties. I ordered Korean Jam Bong; a spicy noodle soup with assorted meat and vegetables. I loved it and I'll be back. The portions are large and reasonably priced. One thing I love about Sushi Popo is that everything is made to order. I am not a fan of the Chinese buffet, or take-out, for that matter. With regards to their stif fry, none of the other places in town can match their northern-style Chinese menu items. I should note, there's no kids' menu. But the portions are huge, so ordering two or three dishes and dining family style is an option.

Good cali roles, there. Rice is some of the best I have had and the price is great for the quality and size.

Used to be good but since first time I tried it it just declining, they used to accommodate different request depending on nutritional restriction but not any more and seem who ever manage/own/cook in this restaurant are irradiated when people make requests and reject them all the time now. The food used to be great and the sushi fresh and tasty but not anymore. In addition to increasing the prices and not honoring deals they advertise.

I just have the Chinese food and one Sushi. Sushi is ok (I am not Japanese), but Chinese food is again...American Chinese food.... have the same name but taste different.

This was my first try at sushi in Iowa City. I'm kind of a sushi n00b in general so I didn't really know what to expect when I came across Sushi Po Po. Must say that I was very satisfied with the whole experience. The special was 3 rolls for $12 which was very well priced for what I got. I picked the California roll, Spicy tuna roll and some roll that was fried and had shrimp(can't remember the name :/). They were all pretty solid but nothing that blew my mind. They also had some of the best crab rangoons i've ever had! My brother ordered the general's chicken and it was freakin' delicious. Waitress was nice and service was good. Definitely can't wait to try some of the other items on the menu.

Sushi Popo had pretty good service. Sushi was alright., but nothing stuck out as great. I would try it again for dinner. Atmosphere was casual.

Expecting top-notch sushi in Iowa is kind of like expecting the best beluga caviar at a Memphis pit barbeque. That being said, if you're in the Iowa City area and, like me, have a hard time not eating eating sushi at least once a week, Sushi Popo is the place to go, hands down. IMPORTANT NOTE: They have recently (within the past couple months) re-vamped their sushi menu and added A LOT of things to it. They even offer toro, which most sushi restaurants outside New York City have never even heard of. Last time I was there, I was pretty impressed with both the nigiri and the maki we ordered. The best part about this place: the prices. They are SO reasonable. Better food and better prices than Takanami, for sure.

Iowa City has a number of excellent Asian restaurants. This is my current favorite. Although I like everything I've had on the menu so far, my favorites are the Jam Bong (a big spicy bowl of everything delicious) and the sushi. The Bento box was good as well (Aoesche used to be my favorite for this, but new management dropped that restaurant out of first place). As the other reviewer said, this is a place that I would be happy to visit once a week. Or more. Casual, cozy dining, friendly service.

Not a fan, one of the worst I have had. The chicken didn't look or taste like chicken. We had 5 ppl second guess if it was pork or chicken, the chicken won 3-2 but still not sure. I would go elsewhere for Asian food, this one on the lower end in my opinion.

Clean restaurant, friendly staff, good food, but service is a little slow sometimes. I like that they have gluten free soy sauce and are able to modify some meals to fit allergy needs.

We have tried to like this place because it is close to our house. But it is so hit or miss. We've had terrible meals and horrible service here too many times now to make up for those times that both were great. Now we drive 20 minutes to a better restaurant rather than go through dealing with it.

This is about my 3rd time here. Every time before we come here we wait at least 30 minutes to get any food which is understandable in most busy restaurants . I'm waiting for my food as I'm writing this review and it's been about 40 minutes and still nothing. The food isn't that great either to be waiting that long. The service is horrible as well.

Have been wanting to try this place and it definitely didn't disappoint!! I had the sesame chicken lunch box special with crab rangoon appetizer. Sesame chicken and fried rice were delicious and tasted freshly made (unlike other local grab and go chinese places). Crab rangoon was the best I've had in the Iowa City area so far for sure. Although I am still giving this place 5 stars because it deserves it, there are a few things I still need to point out that weren't quite up to par. There was only 1 server working and handling at least 9 tables plus acting as the host as well. She did a great job but the experience would have been slightly better and more timely had there been more staff. Second thing that could be improved is that my miso soup was barely warm. Still a 5 star lunch meal and will definitely go back!

Since my original review, we've been here quite a few times. Through the last year or so, the place has made several changes. Some price increases, some renovations, new fish tank. But what hasn't unfortunately improved was the service and speed of service. The last few times we experienced a trend. If you want to wait 30-45 mins for them to cut a few slices of fish that doesn't require cooking, you've found the place. The food is decent and offers your Chinese, Korean, and Japanese cuisines (typical in places that don't have authentic food). the dishes should at least be plated to match what you pay. Apparently we were the only ones that ordered sushi, because others around us got there after but got their food first. Maybe we were the ones that didn't figure it out. To compare, Oyama is the better bet for what you pay. This used to be a reliable place but with this last experience, we probably won't be coming back.

As mentioned in the other reviews, the food is great but the service is slow. We just had sushi and were there for over an hour and a half on a Wednesday night. The rolls were interesting and not overpriced. We will continue to go back, but only when we aren't in a hurry.

This is one of the most authentic japanese/korean/chinese restaurant in iowa city. If you're looking for traditional dishes this is the place to go. Love the nabeyaki udon here. Every entree I've tried here is delicious. The restaurant is very clean and the service is excellent.

I haven't been to Sushi Popo for over a year and since it is near where I live thought I would give it another try. I ordered the LA Roll, Dynamite Roll, Crab Rangoon and Miso Soup. I got take out and they forgot to give me soy sauce which isn't a huge deal since I can typically eat sushi without it, but the sushi didn't taste fresh and the rice was watery. I don't know if I could have even finish that sushi if it was immersed in soy sauce . The crab rangoon and miso soup was ok, but nothing I would go back for. I didn't even finish all my sushi because it just tasted like it had been sitting out for hours even though I called the order in 20-30 minutes prior. Needless to say it will be many, many years before I return.

Every time we drive by Sushi Popo we talk about how we need to try the place if for no other reason, because of the name! We were very excited that now we get to talk about how good the place is, along with having the most interesting name in the area. We sauntered around 8 pm on a night when both of us got off late. The place has a good amount of seating along with a couple private-ish rooms along the left side of the restaurant. They're basically cubicles with some cutesy decor and provide a little more intimate space. Unfortunately, we were also privy to the conversation of the ladies in the adjacent private-ish room and learned all about "why I like, totally like insert trendy item here." The lack of music in the place made it easier to catch up on what everyone else was saying, but overall it's a minor point. If they added some background music the place could go from good to great. The food was pretty rad. We're used to good sushi that's relatively inexpensive and hadn't found it until now! We started off with some crackling rice soup and they were nice enough to split it for us. Soups were plentiful and ranged from $2 to $3.50 for a decent size bowl - definitely enough to split as an appetizer. It was incredibly fresh and different than what we expected given the Chinese influence - we figured it'd be MSG broth w/ some veggies, but were pleasantly surprised! The majority of the rolls were under $6 and they had a 3 for $12.99 special that included some of our faves! The LA roll (BBQ salmon skin) was superb and this is the first place we've found on this half of the country that does it well. The spicy tuna had some kick - but not too much - and was tasty. The spider roll was excellent, though they didn't have the end piece with the legs sticking out - didn't take away from the flavor, just the 4 year old in me that thinks its fun! Finally. The Alaska roll was also quite nice - salmon skin, crab, cream cheese and avocado I believe - very good! The only thing that was different from what we've had before was the use of lettuce in some of the rolls - overall it didn't detract, but did add more color. Presentation was excellent and the service was quick, though we came later in the evening so we can't comment on when it's busy. They almost always have a coupon from the "Valu-pack" that gets you something on the order of $5 off your meal. We got out for around $25 w/ drinks and were full when we left. The other dishes they serve ranged from the supermarket Chinese dishes (Which we love!) like General Tso's to more classic Japanese dishes like Yaki Soba and Udon noodles. Bottom line - this is the first place in town that we've found that serves solid sushi and doesn't charge $13 for a California roll. You'll get good sushi, friendly people and won't spend a ton. This is a place we'll be back to and somewhere we'll be recommending to others looking for sushi in the area!

This is an updated review. The original owner/cook has sold the place to a new owner. Unfortunately, the food quality has deteriorated. They have smattering of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean-Chinese dishes. Nothing is fancy. All are made competently, but nothing stands out. Sushi is okay. Korean-Chinese noodle dishes don't look as good as other places and taste just okay. The worst part of the dining experience at Sushi Popo is the uneven service. When it gets crowded the service really slows down. I have taken one star off from my previous review.

Despite the name, this is a townie sushi place, not a cop sushi place. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Service was kinda slow when we were there on a Friday evening, but they were busy and might have been short staffed. Wife got sushi, I got the house fried rice. It was all good but not anything to write home about. Except I just wrote on yelp about it. Dammit.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
